The Doorway Within: Writing as a Path to the Soul by Dena DeLuco

Most of us are taught to look outward for answers. We search through books, teachers, experts, or even the endless scroll of advice on our phones. Yet there comes a point when all the voices blur together, and the only one that can truly guide us is the one within. Years ago, I searched everywhere for clarity. I thought if I just took the right class, found the right mentor, or read the right book, the answers to my questions would appear. Those things certainly helped, but what shifted everything was surprisingly simple: I began to write.

Not “dear diary” writing. Not carefully planned essays. Just pen to paper, no censoring. At first it was awkward. Sometimes I didn’t know what to say. Other times I stared at the page and felt frozen, the voice in my head whispering, “You’re not a writer.” But when I kept showing up, something softened. Slowly, words began to spill out. Some were messy, some surprising, and every so often, a phrase landed that felt like it carried the wisdom of my soul.

If you’ve ever wanted to write but don’t know where to begin, or if you’ve experienced the frustration of writer’s block, you are not alone. The truth is you don’t need to be a “writer” at all. The soul doesn’t care about grammar or style (or spelling or punctuation!). It cares that you show up...That you’re willing to listen...That you’re brave enough to put ink on the page and discover what has been waiting inside you.

Science confirms what mystics have always known. Expressive writing helps reduce stress, supports healing, and allows us to access deeper parts of our awareness. Writing becomes more than words. It becomes a mirror, a medicine, and a map.

As the old saying reminds us, the kingdom is within. Writing is one of the most graceful ways to step inside and explore it.

On Saturday, October 25 at Villa Maria, I will be holding a one-day workshop where we will explore this doorway together. Through meditation, guided prompts, and free-flow writing, you will learn how to listen more deeply and allow the words to emerge. No experience is necessary, only curiosity and an open heart.

If you feel the tug to connect with your inner voice, I invite you to join us. https://vmesc.org/programs-retreats/all-events?id=1027

Sometimes the next step is not outside of you at all. It is waiting in the quiet space of your own heart.
